Houses that are constructed using light gauge metal stud framing
offer home-buyers one of the best strength to weight ratios of all
construction materials. A metal framed home is stronger and lighter than
a conventionally framed structure.
Steel stud framing does not warp, twist, split, crack, or shrink as wood
framing can and does. Walls that are built straight and square, stay
straight and square. The metal framed home purchaser will also have
fewer problems with nail popping and the subsequent repairs and
redecorating required to fix the damage.
A panelized metal framed home has the added advantage of being
prefabricated in a controlled factory-like environment. Quality control
protocols ensure a high quality product. The panels are sent to your
building site and erected in place speeding up the site erection time
required.
A metal stud framed home can be engineered to withstand the worst
conditions that Mother Nature can throw at us. High seismic and wind
loads are no problem for engineered steel stud framing.
There have even been forensic studies done on homes on Oahu with steel
stud framing showing that there was no visible sign of corrosion.
Aesthetics has been identified as the second largest concern for most home buyers - How will my new home look?
Metal stud framed homes can be decorated and finished just like any
wood framed home. Again, there are fewer problems caused by the
wood framing twisting, cracking etc. as identified above. Metal
framed walls are installed straight, square and true and remain that
way.
The Healthy House Institute recommends metal framed buildings for
good indoor air quality. Metal stud framing resists the growth of mould
and mould spores that can lead to chronic illness. Pesticides and toxins
are not required to protect the metal framing from termites and other
vermin as may be the case in wood structures.
Another health feature of a metal stud framed home is that the structure is
non-combustible - a point of safety for any prospective purchaser. (This
item may reduce your home insurance costs as well!)
Metal stud framed homes offer buyers an environmentally friendly
alternative to wood framing. There is little waste in a steel framed
building when compared to a wood framed house. What little waste there
may be is 100% recyclable. An average wood framed home has about 50
cubic feet of landfill waste while a steel framed home has about 1.5
cubic feet of RECYCLABLE waste (a considerable cost saving during
construction). It would take about 25 old-growth trees to build a 2,500
square foot home. The same home framed in metal would take about 7
recycled automobiles.
Steel framing materials contain an average of 67% recycled material -
material that is therefore not taking up space in our shrinking
landfills. Each year, there is about 60 million tons of steel scrap
recycled which is more than paper, aluminum, glass and plastic combined.
Doing your homework to find the manufacturer and builder that best suits
your needs and desires is of course still required. As always, it's
'Buyer Beware'. However, the advantages of steel stud framing and shop
fabrication/panelization will certainly make your decision easier.
